Amidst a bitter family feud and a sprawling property dispute estimated at ₹30,000 crore, Mandhira Kapur, sister of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has shared a poignant message on social media, evoking memories of her brother and hinting at the turmoil surrounding his legacy. Sunjay Kapur, who was the chairperson of Sona Comstar, passed away on June 12, 2025, due to cardiac issues, triggering a complex legal battle over his inheritance.
On the day of Raksha Bandhan, Mandhira posted a throwback picture on Instagram featuring herself, Sunjay, and their mother, Rani Kapur. Her heartfelt caption alluded to the difficult times the family is facing. "It's taken me all day to write this, as today has been especially difficult. As Raksha Bandhan winds down, placing flowers near your picture, I tried to stay composed while Mum cried," she wrote.
Mandhira's message also contained cryptic undertones, seemingly referencing the ongoing chaos at Sona Comstar. "The thread that binds us, invisible yet strong, remains unbroken, as eternal as our memories. I relive the moments spent with you, and now, I find myself protecting what you would have wanted, and what Dad dreamed, though it was always meant to be the other way around," she stated. She further added, "If you were still here, everything would be different, everything would be better, my dear Bhaiya".
The family dispute took a public turn when Rani Kapur, Sunjay's mother, filed a criminal complaint with UK authorities, requesting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her son's death, which she has described as "mysterious". She has also alleged that she was pressured into signing certain documents and faced financial restrictions. Sona Comstar has denied these allegations, asserting that Rani has had no role in the company since 2019, and has issued her a legal notice.
Adding to the complexity, Sunjay Kapur's personal life has also come under scrutiny. He was previously married to actress Karisma Kapoor, and they have two children, Samaira and Kiaan, who are considered rightful heirs to his estate. Sources close to the Kapur family have clarified that Karisma Kapoor is not involved in the inheritance dispute and is primarily focused on the well-being of her children. Despite their parents' divorce in 2016, Sunjay had ensured that Samaira and Kiaan's financial interests were protected, allotting them bonds and a monthly income.
This isn't the first time Mandhira has publicly expressed her grief and regret over her relationship with Sunjay. Following his death, she revealed that they had not spoken for four years due to a sibling squabble fueled by "egos and natural bullishness". She lamented the lost moments and the finality of their estrangement.
Mandhira's recent post on Raksha Bandhan underscores the deep sense of loss and the complex family dynamics at play. It highlights the emotional toll of the ongoing property dispute and the determination to protect her brother's legacy amidst the turmoil. Her words, "Protecting your memory is my sacred duty," resonate with the weight of responsibility she feels during this challenging time.
