Tottenham Hotspur have officially secured the permanent signing of French forward Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich. The deal, finalized on Sunday, June 15, 2025, marks the first signing under the club's new manager, Thomas Frank. Tel, who initially joined Spurs on loan in January, has agreed to a six-year contract that will keep him in North London until 2031.

While initial reports suggested a potential €50 million (approximately £42.5 million) option to buy, Tottenham managed to negotiate a lower fee. The final transfer fee is reported to be £29.8 million (35 million euros), with a further £4.2 million (5 million euros) in potential add-ons. This represents a significant reduction from the originally discussed price, with some sources indicating that Spurs have effectively knocked around £15 million off the initial option. Spurs had also paid a loan fee of £7.3 million in January.

Tel's move to Tottenham was initially orchestrated under former manager Ange Postecoglou, with Frank giving his approval upon taking the reins. The 20-year-old made 20 appearances for Tottenham during his loan spell, scoring three goals. He also was an unused substitute in the Europa League final win against Manchester United. Despite the relatively modest goal tally, his performances and attitude impressed both the coaching staff and his teammates.

Bayern Munich's board member for sport, Max Eberl, acknowledged Tel's positive impact during his time in Germany. He stated that Tel "mastered his first steps at the top level of European football" with Bayern and was "a popular figure in the squad." Eberl believes the move to Tottenham is "the right one for his development" and that he will continue his journey with Spurs.

Tottenham are looking to further bolster their attacking options this summer, with Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa reportedly targets. However, they face competition for Mbeumo from Manchester United.
