The aftermath of the Air India Flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad continues to unfold as authorities work tirelessly to identify victims and support grieving families. As of today, June 15, 2025, significant progress has been made in the identification process, with DNA matching confirming the identities of a substantial number of victims.
News reports indicate that DNA matches have been confirmed for 47 victims of the crash. This crucial step allows authorities to release the remains to their families for final rites and closure. So far, 24 bodies have been handed over to their respective families. The process is painstaking and time-consuming, but officials are expediting it as much as possible, recognizing the immense emotional distress faced by the families.
The identification process relies heavily on DNA profiling due to the severe damage and charring of the bodies caused by the crash. Teams from the State Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) have been working around the clock to match DNA samples provided by relatives with those of the deceased.
Air India has been actively involved in supporting the affected families. The airline has established contact with the next of kin of all passengers and crew members, offering condolences and assistance with the necessary procedures. Over 400 family members have arrived in Ahmedabad and are receiving support from Air India's dedicated teams on the ground. In addition to emotional support, Tata Sons has announced financial assistance, including ₹20 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased passenger and crew member. This is in addition to the ₹1 crore already announced by Tata Sons.
The Air India flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025. The crash claimed the lives of 241 passengers and crew members, as well as several people on the ground. One passenger miraculously survived the crash and is currently receiving medical treatment.
In addition to the ongoing efforts to identify victims and support families, investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is conducting a separate investigation into the technical aspects of the accident. The black box has been recovered. A high-level multi-disciplinary committee has also been established to examine the causes of the accident.
