The Border Security Force (BSF) has recently achieved significant success in thwarting a major Phensedyl smuggling operation along the India-Bangladesh border. These operations highlight the ongoing efforts to curb illegal activities across the international boundary.
On June 8, 2025, vigilant BSF jawans of the 161 Battalion, stationed at the Gongra Border Outpost in the Nadia district of West Bengal, acted on intelligence regarding potential smuggling activities. The troops strategically set up ambushes at sensitive locations. Around 3 a.m., they noticed suspicious movements near the border fence, where smugglers were concealed within a banana orchard. Upon being discovered, the smugglers fled, taking advantage of the darkness and dense vegetation. A subsequent search operation led to the recovery of 2,100,000 Bangladeshi Taka, 340 bottles of Phensedyl, and 11 kg of Ganja.
Earlier in March 2025, in North 24 Parganas district, BSF personnel were attacked by Bangladeshi infiltrators attempting to smuggle Phensedyl. The BSF successfully contained the attack, seized 787 bottles of Phensedyl and a sharp edged weapon, and drove away the infiltrators. One smuggler was injured during the encounter.
In December 2024, the BSF in Tripura intercepted multiple smuggling attempts, seizing a significant consignment of items worth over Rs 2 lakh. The seized items included Ganja, Phensedyl, sugar, and other contraband.
These successful operations underscore the BSF's commitment to preventing smuggling and drug trafficking along the India-Bangladesh border. The vigilance and prompt response of BSF personnel have consistently disrupted smuggling attempts. The recovered items are handed over to the concerned departments for further legal action. Phensedyl, a codeine-based cough syrup, is a frequently smuggled item across the India-Bangladesh border. The BSF has been actively conducting operations to curb its illegal trade.
