Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply as Iran and Israel continue to trade strikes, raising concerns about a wider regional conflict. Amid the ongoing hostilities, India has initiated measures to ensure the safety of its citizens in the affected areas. Simultaneously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending the G7 Summit in Canada, where global challenges, including the situation in West Asia, are being discussed.
Reports indicate that Iran has launched fresh missile strikes on Israel, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. According to news reports, Israeli forces have also intensified their attacks, targeting military and nuclear sites within Iran, as well as civilian infrastructure. Casualties have been mounting on both sides, with reports of hundreds killed and thousands wounded. The international community has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence and has called for de-escalation and restraint. The G7 has expressed support for Israel and called Iran a source of instability. US President Donald Trump has urged for de-escalation in the conflict and hinted at greater involvement by the US and warned Tehran residents to evacuate.
In response to the escalating conflict, the Indian government has started evacuating its citizens from Iran, prioritizing the safety of Indian students studying in the country. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is actively engaged with regional counterparts to address the situation. Approximately 600 students have been moved to Qom from Tehran, a frequent target of Israeli strikes. Around 110 students from Urmia have reached the Armenian border and are awaiting evacuation. Iran has agreed to India's request to enable safe evacuation of nearly 10,000 Indian students stuck between mounting Israeli airstrikes, and provided land border crossings into Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan after the Iranian airspace has been shut down. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is closely monitoring the security situation and liaising with students to keep them safe. The embassy has also issued advisories urging all Indian nationals to stay in touch and avoid unnecessary movement.
