Air India is facing significant disruptions to its flight schedule, with multiple international flights cancelled on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. These cancellations come in the wake of heightened scrutiny and safety checks following a recent tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which resulted in over 270 fatalities.
Several factors are contributing to the cancellations. Increased safety checks, particularly on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, are leading to longer turnaround times for aircraft. Some flights have been cancelled due to technical issues discovered during mandatory pre-flight checks. Additionally, "aircraft unavailability" and "operational issues" have been cited as reasons for some cancellations.
Among the cancelled flights are those operating on the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, the same aircraft model involved in the Ahmedabad crash. These include flights from Delhi to Dubai (AI 915), Delhi to Vienna (AI 153), Delhi to Paris (AI 143), Ahmedabad to London (AI 159), and Bengaluru to London (AI 133). A flight from London to Amritsar (AI 170) was also among those cancelled. A technical issue also forced a Dreamliner operating as AI 315 to Delhi to return to Hong Kong.
Specifically, Air India flight AI143 from Delhi to Paris was cancelled due to an issue detected during pre-flight checks. The airline stated that the time required to address the issue would conflict with night operation restrictions at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Consequently, the return flight AI142 from Paris to Delhi has also been cancelled.
Passengers affected by the cancellations are being offered several options, including hotel accommodations, full refunds, and complimentary rescheduling of their flights.
The recent Air India crash in Ahmedabad, where an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff, has prompted increased safety oversight. The accident, which claimed the lives of all 241 passengers and crew members on board, along with more than 30 people on the ground, has raised concerns about the safety of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.
Air India has enhanced its safety checks on all flights, especially those operated by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. These enhanced checks are likely contributing to the disruptions in the airline's flight schedule.
Air India has a substantial fleet of 33 Dreamliners and has over 200 new aircraft on order, including 20 additional 787s. The airline is one of Boeing's largest customers.
