In a scene straight out of an action movie, Jalaja Suresh, the Vice President of Neduvathoor Panchayat in Kollam district, Kerala, displayed remarkable courage and quick thinking by chasing down two women who had stolen money from her bag on a crowded KSRTC bus. The incident, which unfolded on Monday afternoon around 2 PM, has turned the local leader into an overnight sensation, lauded for her bravery and determination.
Jalaja, who also works as a Post Office RD agent, boarded a KSRTC bus from Kundara to Kottarakkara. As she prepared to disembark at Kacherimukku, she noticed two women standing close to the bus door. They touched her and inquired about the upcoming stop. After she alighted, Jalaja discovered that a significant sum of money was missing from her bag, and the zipper was open. Realizing she had been pickpocketed, she immediately sprang into action.
Without hesitation, Jalaja hired an auto-rickshaw and began pursuing the bus. Her hunch proved right when she spotted the same women disembarking at the next stop near Chandamukku. The alleged thieves were attempting to escape in another auto-rickshaw. Undeterred, Jalaja intercepted them.
In a dramatic confrontation, Jalaja, with the assistance of onlookers and local police, confronted the two women. During the questioning, currency notes started falling from their clothing, confirming Jalaja's suspicions. A substantial amount of money was recovered from their possession. The apprehended individuals were identified as Shelvi, 45, and her daughter Athini, 27, residents of Gopichettipalayam near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
Police reports indicate that Shelvi and Athini are repeat offenders with a history of theft. Their photos are among 52 displayed by the police in public areas to warn people against known criminals. The two have been arrested.
Jalaja expressed her relief and gratitude, stating that the stolen money belonged to her clients in the RD scheme, emphasizing the importance of recovering it. She also thanked the auto-rickshaw driver who aided in the chase, the local residents who offered assistance, and the police for their prompt response and support in apprehending the culprits.
The incident has garnered widespread attention, with many praising Jalaja's courage and resourcefulness. Her actions serve as an inspiration and a reminder of the importance of vigilance and community support in combating crime. Jalaja's heroic act has not only helped recover stolen money but has also sent a strong message to criminals, highlighting the active role citizens can play in ensuring safety and security in their communities.
