Ben Stokes' India Series Absence: Vaughan Questions England Captain's Priorities and Commitment to Test Cricket.

The upcoming Test series between England and India is generating significant buzz, and not all of it is centered on the field. Former England captain Michael Vaughan has voiced his surprise and concern over Ben Stokes' apparent lack of preparation leading up to the crucial five-Test series. Vaughan is "staggered" by the limited time Stokes has spent batting, especially considering the importance of the series and the Ashes later in the year.

Stokes, who is returning to the side after recovering from a hamstring injury, featured in a one-off Test against Zimbabwe. However, Vaughan believes that Stokes needs more time in the middle to find his rhythm, particularly after what he considers a dip in form last season. Vaughan pointed out that top athletes in other sports would ensure they get ample game time before a major event, and questioned why Stokes wouldn't want to play for England Lions "just for a knock, not to bowl".

Vaughan highlighted Stokes' importance to England's chances, especially in the Ashes. He stated that Stokes needs to be firing on all cylinders with both bat and ball for England to succeed. He emphasized that Stokes is crucial to England's hopes of ending their recent frustration in Australia. He expressed his bewilderment that Stokes hasn't looked to get some minutes in the middle to ensure he's got the rhythm with the bat.

Stokes' return from injury has been carefully managed, with the all-rounder himself acknowledging the need to gradually return to a full match workload. He has focused on full-body fitness to ensure he can play freely without hesitation. The Test against Zimbabwe served as a "litmus test" ahead of the India series and the Ashes.

It's important to note that Stokes' commitment to the Test format has been unwavering. He has previously opted out of the IPL to focus on his international duties, a decision that reflects his dedication to the England Test squad. Stokes' absence from the IPL auction makes him ineligible for both 2025 and 2026, even if he wishes to participate later.

While Vaughan's criticism might seem harsh, it stems from a place of genuine concern and a deep understanding of Stokes' value to the England team. Only time will tell if Stokes' limited preparation will affect his performance in the upcoming series. The series begins on June 20, 2025, at Headingley.
