The Indian community in Canada is mourning the death of Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at the University of Calgary. The Consulate General of India in Vancouver confirmed the news on Thursday, June 19, 2025, expressing their condolences and offering assistance to the bereaved family. The circumstances surrounding her death are currently unclear, and Canadian authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the cause.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Consulate stated, "We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at University of Calgary. The Consulate is in touch with the authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family. Our heartfelt condolences & prayers are with her family & friends."

While official details are awaited, an unverified social media post has claimed that Tanya Tyagi may have suffered a fatal heart attack on June 17, 2025. The post also appealed to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) of India for help in repatriating her body to India. Tanya was reportedly a resident of Vijay Park, Northeast Delhi.

The sudden death of Tanya Tyagi has sparked grief and concern among the Indian student community in Canada and back home. This incident is the latest in a series of troubling cases involving Indian students abroad. In March 2025, Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old Indian citizen and permanent US resident studying at the University of Pittsburgh, went missing while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. She was last seen on March 6, 2025, and her case remains unresolved.

These incidents have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of Indian students pursuing education abroad. The Indian diaspora has been increasingly vocal, calling for stronger safety measures, quicker consular responses, and better support systems for grieving families.

The Consulate General of India in Vancouver is in contact with Canadian authorities and is providing all necessary assistance to Tanya Tyagi's family. The focus remains on determining the cause of her death and ensuring that her family receives the support they need during this difficult time. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by Indian students abroad and the importance of robust support systems to ensure their safety and well-being.
