Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Iran, the safety and well-being of Indian nationals in the region have become a paramount concern for the Indian government. Recent developments have led to increased anxieties, prompting many Indians to consider leaving Israel.

The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv has been actively engaged with the Indian community, which includes caregivers, workers, students, businesspersons, and tourists. On June 15, 2025, the embassy issued an advisory urging all Indian nationals to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement, and adhere strictly to the safety protocols advised by Israeli authorities. The embassy emphasized that the safety and security of Indian nationals are of utmost importance. To provide assistance, the embassy has established 24/7 functional helplines and has shared contact details for citizens in Israel.

In light of the escalating conflict, the Indian government has decided to extend "Operation Sindhu" to include Indian nationals in Israel who wish to return home. This operation, initially launched to evacuate Indians from Iran, will now facilitate the travel of those in Israel through land borders, followed by air travel to India. The Ministry of External Affairs has requested Indian nationals in Israel to register with the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv to facilitate their evacuation.

The decision to extend Operation Sindhu to Israel reflects the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad amidst rising tensions. With cities like Tel Aviv facing attacks, the need to evacuate Indian nationals has become increasingly urgent. There are approximately 38,000 Indian nationals residing in Israel, the majority of whom are employed as caregivers, diamond traders, construction and agriculture workers, IT professionals, and students.

The situation has been particularly concerning for those in Tehran, where Israeli strikes have targeted not only military and nuclear sites but also civilian neighborhoods. The Indian Embassy in Tehran has been providing support, including bussing out Indian nationals and establishing emergency helplines.

India's response to the crisis underscores its delicate balancing act in maintaining amicable relations with both Israel and Iran. As the conflict escalates, India is prioritizing the safety and security of its citizens while also navigating the complex diplomatic landscape of the Middle East. Former diplomat Anil Wadhwa noted that India would resist pressure to take a clear side in the conflict unless its vital interests are directly threatened, emphasizing India's commitment to strategic autonomy.

The Indian government's proactive measures, including issuing advisories, providing helpline support, and launching evacuation operations, demonstrate its dedication to protecting its citizens in conflict zones. As the situation continues to evolve, the Indian Embassy in Israel remains vigilant, closely monitoring developments and coordinating with Israeli authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the Indian community.
