Prithvi Shaw, the 25-year-old Mumbai batsman, has formally requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), signaling his intent to represent another state in the upcoming domestic season. This decision comes at a crucial juncture in Shaw's career, as he seeks to revitalize his cricketing journey and explore new opportunities.
Shaw has reportedly communicated to the MCA that he has received offers from three to four different state associations and is currently evaluating his options. Abhay Hadap, the secretary of the MCA, confirmed the receipt of Shaw's letter and stated that the association has informed the Apex Council members and will issue the NOC soon. Shaw last played for Mumbai on December 24.
In his letter to the MCA, Shaw expressed his belief that representing a new state association would significantly contribute to his growth and development as a cricketer. He wrote, "At this juncture of my career, I have been presented with a promising opportunity to play professional cricket under another State Association, which I believe, will further contribute to the growth and development as a cricketer. In light of this, I kindly request you to issue me a No Objection Certificate (NOC) that will enable me to officially represent the new state association in the upcoming domestic season."
Shaw's request for an NOC follows a somewhat turbulent period with Mumbai cricket. Despite being hailed as a prodigious talent early in his career, he has faced challenges in maintaining consistency and securing a regular spot in the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad. Last year, he was dropped from the squad due to fitness concerns. Although he participated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, contributing to Mumbai's title win under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy, he was subsequently left out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad.
Shaw's omission from the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad led to a public expression of disappointment and confusion on social media. In a post, he alluded to his past performances and questioned what more he needed to do to gain recognition, while also expressing his determination to return stronger.
However, reports suggest that the MCA has previously raised concerns about Shaw's discipline, fitness, and attitude. Allegations of missed training sessions and breaches of team protocols have surfaced, contributing to the perception that Shaw has not always adhered to the required standards.
If the MCA grants the NOC, Shaw will follow in the footsteps of other cricketers who have sought fresh starts by representing different states. This move could provide him with an opportunity to showcase his talent in a new environment, free from past associations and expectations. It also mirrors a similar decision made by his childhood friend, Arjun Tendulkar, son of Sachin Tendulkar, who shifted from Mumbai to Goa in search of greater opportunities.
Shaw burst onto the scene by leading the Indian team to victory in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup. He made his international debut for the senior team later that year. While he has shown glimpses of his potential, including a century on his Test debut, he has not been able to cement his place in the national side. He has played five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I for India. Shaw also went unsold at the IPL 2025 auction.
By seeking a move to another state team, Shaw is aiming to reignite his career and prove his mettle in domestic cricket. The change of scenery and the prospect of new challenges could be precisely what he needs to rediscover his form and fulfill his potential.
