An Air India flight AI-130 from London Heathrow to Mumbai experienced a mid-air health scare on Monday, June 23, 2025, with passengers and crew members reporting feeling unwell. Initial reports varied, with some outlets stating that up to 11 individuals, including six crew members, were affected. However, Air India clarified that five passengers and two crew members experienced symptoms such as dizziness and nausea during different phases of the flight.
The Boeing 777 continued its journey and landed safely in Mumbai, where medical teams were prepared to provide immediate assistance. Upon arrival, two passengers and two cabin crew members who were still feeling unwell were taken to the medical room for further examination and were later discharged.
The cause of the incident is currently under investigation. While there has been no official confirmation, several possibilities are being explored. One media report suggested that the symptoms could have been caused by a lack of oxygen due to decompression or a gradual decrease in cabin pressure. Another report cited a senior airline official who suggested food poisoning as a possible cause. However, this report also noted that the pilots, who are typically served the same food after the passengers, did not report any similar discomfort.
Air India has officially acknowledged the incident and stated that they have notified the regulator. "On board flight AI-130 from London Heathrow to Mumbai, five passengers and two crew reported feeling dizzy and nauseous during different phases of the flight," the airline said in a statement. "The flight landed safely in Mumbai where our medical teams were ready to provide immediate medical assistance. After landing, two passengers and two cabin crew, who continued to feel unwell, were taken to the medical room for further examination and were later discharged. We are investigating the incident and have duly notified the regulator."
This incident occurred on the same day as a separate issue involving an Air India Express flight to Jammu, which had to return mid-air due to suspected GPS interference. While there is no known connection between the two incidents, they have collectively put pressure on the airline to conduct thorough investigations and provide clear explanations. The passengers from the London-Mumbai flight have been discharged, and the Delhi-Jammu service resumed with a replacement aircraft. Both matters remain under investigation.
