Calgary Flames May Trade Rasmus Andersson Following Stalled Contract Extension Negotiations; Future Uncertain.

The Calgary Flames and defenseman Rasmus Andersson appear headed for a split, with trade winds swirling around the 28-year-old Swede following unsuccessful contract extension negotiations. Andersson is entering the final year of his current deal, a six-year contract carrying a $4.55 million cap hit, and is eligible to sign an extension as of July 1st. However, reports indicate that the two sides are not on the same page regarding his future salary, leading to increased speculation that the Flames are now actively exploring trade options.

Andersson has been a mainstay on the Flames' blueline since becoming a regular in the 2018-19 season. Selected 53rd overall in the 2015 NHL Draft, he has developed into a reliable two-way defenseman, logging significant ice time and contributing both offensively and defensively. In the 2024-25 season, Andersson recorded 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points in 81 games. He consistently averages over 22 minutes of ice time per game and is a key penalty killer, further enhancing his value. He also served as an alternate captain, underscoring his leadership role within the team. Despite his individual contributions, the Flames finished the season outside the playoff picture, prompting a re-evaluation of the team's direction.

Several factors contribute to the Flames' willingness to consider trading Andersson. The team has a promising pipeline of young, right-shot defensemen, including Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz, who are nearing NHL readiness. Trading Andersson would open up opportunities for these prospects to step into larger roles and gain valuable experience. Moreover, Andersson's expiring contract makes him a valuable trade asset, as the Flames could acquire valuable draft picks, prospects, or even a young NHL player in return. General Manager Craig Conroy has shown a willingness to make such moves, having previously traded players like Tyler Toffoli and Andrew Mangiapane in similar situations.

Numerous teams are reportedly interested in acquiring Andersson, with the Ottawa Senators, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens among those mentioned. Andersson also has a limited no-trade clause, giving him some control over his destination. Some reports suggest that Andersson is "ready for something new". Teams looking to acquire Andersson would likely be interested in signing him to a contract extension, making his willingness to commit long-term a crucial factor in any potential trade.

The upcoming NHL Draft could serve as a catalyst for a potential Andersson trade, as teams often look to make significant moves during this time. The Flames are said to be seeking a second-line center with a right-hand shot or a young left-shot NHL defenseman in any deal. Other potential returns could include high draft picks or prospects, particularly centers.

Trading Andersson would provide the Flames with an opportunity to further their ongoing retooling process, acquire valuable assets for the future, and create roster space for their emerging young defensemen. While Andersson has been a valuable contributor to the team, the Flames appear ready to move forward in a new direction, potentially making him one of the most sought-after players on the trade market.
