Following India's disappointing five-wicket loss to England in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, Mohammed Siraj has faced criticism regarding his bowling performance. While the surface offered little assistance to the fast bowlers, Siraj's inability to contain the flow of runs and pick up crucial wickets has been a point of concern.

Siraj bowled a total of 41 overs in the match, managing to take only two wickets. In the first innings, he conceded 122 runs in 27 overs, picking up two scalps, and in the second innings, he went wicketless in 14 overs, giving away 51 runs. His economy rate of 4.50 was higher compared to some of the other bowlers.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his concerns about Siraj's performance. Ashwin suggested that Siraj should focus on controlling the run flow rather than solely aiming for wickets. He emphasized the importance of bowlers playing a supportive role by building pressure and preventing easy runs, even if they are not taking wickets consistently. Ashwin drew a comparison to Ishant Sharma's role in the past, where he would bowl economically and maintain pressure on one end, allowing other bowlers to attack. He also mentioned Morne Morkel and his ability to bowl economically.

Mohammed Kaif also criticized Siraj's bowling. Despite the challenging conditions, Jasprit Bumrah managed to pick up a five-wicket haul in the first innings, demonstrating that wickets could be taken with disciplined bowling. Prasidh Krishna, although expensive with an economy of 6.40, managed to pick up three wickets.

England's successful chase of 371 runs in the second innings further highlighted the struggles of the Indian bowlers. The opening partnership between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett set the tone for the chase, with both Bumrah and Siraj going wicketless.

Adding to the pressure, Siraj was visibly upset with England opener Zak Crawley on Day 5 when Crawley backed away from a delivery, citing movement behind the sightscreen. This incident occurred just before lunch, and Siraj was seen exchanging words with Duckett, reflecting his frustration.

While Siraj is known for his passionate and wholehearted approach, critics suggest a need for more control and consistency in his bowling. The upcoming matches in the series will be crucial for Siraj to address these concerns and prove his effectiveness in Test cricket. The team management will be expecting him to step up and deliver impactful performances.
