The Carolina Hurricanes have secured forward Juha Jääskä for another two years, announcing a contract extension on Thursday, June 26, 2025. The deal, worth $1.55 million, demonstrates the organization's confidence in the 27-year-old Finn after his successful North American debut.

Jääskä initially joined the Hurricanes as an international free agent following two productive seasons with HIFK in the Finnish Liiga. During his time in Finland, he showcased his offensive capabilities, amassing 22 goals and 67 points in 113 games, along with an additional 5 goals and 11 points in 13 postseason games.

Transitioning to North American hockey, Jääskä began with the Chicago Wolves, the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate. He quickly adapted to the new environment, contributing 12 goals and 21 assists for a total of 33 points in 53 games. His performance ranked fifth on the team in scoring and second among wingers, trailing only prospect Bradly Nadeau.

Jääskä's impressive transition earned him a call-up to the NHL level, where he spent the month of January with the Hurricanes. In 18 NHL games during the 2024-25 season, he recorded four assists while averaging 8:56 of ice time and maintaining a +3 rating. While his offensive output was limited, Jääskä demonstrated a strong understanding of head coach Rod Brind'Amour's system, evidenced by his 61.7% CorsiFor% at even strength. He was also deployed in favorable situations, with 61.7% of his shift starts occurring in the offensive zone.

The structure of Jääskä's new contract is particularly noteworthy. In the 2025-26 season, he will earn $775,000 if he plays in the NHL or $250,000 if he plays in the AHL. However, he is guaranteed at least $425,000, ensuring a significant portion of his salary regardless of where he plays. For the 2026-27 season, Jääskä's contract becomes a one-way deal, guaranteeing him $775,000 regardless of whether he is in the NHL or AHL.

This contract structure provides the Hurricanes with flexibility while also rewarding Jääskä for his performance and potential. He provides valuable organizational depth, capable of playing in both the NHL and AHL. His work ethic, two-way play, and adaptability to the Hurricanes' system make him a valuable asset.

While it remains to be seen how the Hurricanes will configure their bottom-six forward group in the upcoming offseason, Jääskä is expected to compete for a similar role within the organization. His ability to contribute at both the NHL and AHL levels provides the team with options and ensures that he will be a key part of their plans moving forward.
