Paulinho's extra-time goal propelled Palmeiras to a 1-0 victory over Botafogo, securing their place in the Club World Cup quarterfinals. The all-Brazilian clash, held at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, saw Paulinho break the deadlock in the 100th minute, sending Palmeiras into the next round.

The match was a tightly contested affair, marked by attrition and few clear-cut chances in normal time. Both sides struggled to find their rhythm, resulting in a goalless stalemate after 90 minutes. Colombia's Richard Rios came close to scoring for Palmeiras in the first half, but his shot was deflected onto the roof of the net. Estevao had a goal disallowed for offside after the restart, further frustrating Palmeiras' attacking efforts. Botafogo's goalkeeper, John Victor, also made a good save to deny Estevao.

With the game heading into extra time, both managers sought to inject fresh energy into their attacks. Palmeiras brought on Luighi and Paulinho, a substitution that would ultimately prove decisive. In the 100th minute, Paulinho received a pass from Richard Rios on the right flank. He skillfully maneuvered past Botafogo defenders, creating space for a low shot into the far corner of the net. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations among the Palmeiras fans, who made up the majority of the 33,657 crowd.

Botafogo fought hard for an equalizer in the final minutes, but Palmeiras' defense held firm. Palmeiras captain Gustavo Gomez received a red card in the 116th minute for a tackle on Igor Jesus, forcing Palmeiras to see out the final minutes with 10 men. Despite the late scare, Palmeiras managed to maintain their lead and secure the victory.

Paulinho's decisive goal marked a significant moment for the Brazilian winger. Having previously played for Atletico Mineiro, who were defeated by Botafogo in the previous year's Libertadores final, Paulinho seized his opportunity to make a difference. His goal not only secured Palmeiras' progression to the Club World Cup quarterfinals but also showcased his ability to perform under pressure.

Palmeiras will now face the winner of the match between Benfica and Chelsea in the quarterfinal stage. As the first team to reach the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup 2025, they will be returning to Philadelphia to compete.
