Bruins Secure Key Player: Morgan Geekie's Contract Extension Shows Smart Planning for Team's Future

The Boston Bruins have made a significant commitment to forward Morgan Geekie, signing him to a six-year, $33 million contract extension. The deal, which carries an annual cap hit of $5.5 million, will keep the 26-year-old in Boston through the 2030-31 season. This move signals a wise investment by Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney, securing a player who has demonstrated consistent improvement and valuable contributions to the team.

Geekie's journey to this long-term commitment has been marked by steady progress. Originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round (67th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft, he also spent time with the Seattle Kraken before landing in Boston as a free agent. After signing with the Bruins in 2023, Geekie posted a career-high 19 goals and 39 points in 2023-24, and then exploded for a career-high 33 goals and 57 points this past season. Over 333 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, Kraken, and Bruins, Geekie has accumulated 159 points (72 goals, 87 assists).

In the 2024-25 season, Geekie showcased his offensive capabilities, setting career highs in goals (33), assists (24), and points (57) in 77 games. His performance placed him second among Bruins skaters in several key categories, including goals, points, even-strength goals (29), and even-strength points (48). Geekie's versatility and ability to play in a top-line role with Bruins superstar David Pastrnak further solidify his value to the team. Geekie finished his season averaging 2.36 points per 60 minutes of five-on-five play, which was tied with Nathan MacKinnon for the 22nd-best rate among all forwards (minimum 1,000 minutes played).

The Bruins' decision to extend Geekie's contract reflects their belief in his continued growth and potential. The Bruins signed him out Seattle with the acknowledgement that there was a little bit more offensive upside to his game if he were given the minutes and opportunity to play in those situations. To that point, Geekie averaged an even higher 2.47 points per 60 at five-on-five play during his one year in Seattle before landing in Boston as a free agent. At $5.5 million per year, the contract represents a reasonable investment for a player who has consistently improved his offensive output.

This contract extension also provides stability for the Bruins, as Geekie now joins a core group of players signed for the long term. With Pastrnak and Lindholm also locked in for six more seasons, and Swayman for seven, the Bruins have secured key pieces for their future.

The Bruins also announced they had agreed to terms with defenseman Henri Jokiharju on a three-year, $9 million contract through the 2027-28 season, with forward John Beecher on a one-year, $900,000 contract and with goaltender Michael DiPietro on a two-year deal worth $812,500 per year.

In conclusion, the Bruins' extension of Morgan Geekie is a judicious move that addresses both the present and future needs of the team. Geekie's proven ability to elevate his game, combined with his versatility and reasonable cap hit, makes him a valuable asset for the Bruins as they aim to compete for championships in the years to come.
