India made a few changes to their playing XI for the second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham, with the most notable being the resting of premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. India lost the first game by five wickets and trail the series 0-1.

India captain Shubman Gill confirmed at the toss that Bumrah would be rested for the match to manage his workload. Pacer Akash Deep replaced Bumrah in the Indian playing XI. Gill stated that the decision to rest Bumrah was made with workload management in mind, with the understanding that Bumrah would participate in three of the five Tests. Gill also indicated that the team anticipates the pitch at Lord's for the third Test to offer more assistance to fast bowlers, making it a strategic choice to have Bumrah available for that match.

"No Bumrah. Just to manage his workload," Gill said at the coin toss. "We did get a good break and this is an important match for us. But the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch so we'll use him there".

The decision to rest Bumrah has sparked debate among fans and cricket experts. Some have criticized the move, especially with India already trailing in the series. Some fans expressed concerns about prioritizing an individual player in a team game, particularly with the team in a must-win situation. Others supported the decision, recognizing the importance of managing Bumrah's workload to keep him fresh and available for crucial matches later in the series.

India made two other changes to their playing XI for the second Test: * Washington Sundar replaced Shardul Thakur: This move provides the team with an additional spin option, complementing Ravindra Jadeja. Sundar also offers more batting depth. * Nitish Kumar Reddy replaced Sai Sudharsan: This change adds another pace-bowling all-rounder to the squad.

With Jasprit Bumrah rested, the Indian pace attack will consist of Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj. The team hopes that this combination can trouble the English batsmen and help India level the series.

England won the toss and elected to bowl first. England head into the match unchanged after their emphatic five-wicket win at Headingley.
