The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward Elmer Söderblom to a two-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $1.125 million. The announcement was made on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, solidifying Soderblom's place within the organization through the 2026-27 season.
Söderblom, 23, has shown promise with his towering presence and developing skills. The 6-foot-8, 246-pound Swede has split time between the Red Wings and their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.
During the 2024-25 season, Söderblom played 26 games for the Red Wings, recording 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points, along with a plus-two rating. He also registered 43 hits and 38 shots while averaging 13:22 of ice time. With the Griffins, he contributed 5 goals and 12 assists for 17 points in 38 regular-season games.
Söderblom spent the entire 2023-24 campaign with the Griffins, achieving career highs in several categories, including games played (61), goals (13), assists (16), points (29), power-play goals (3), game-winning goals (3), and shots (114). He also added 1 goal and 1 assist in 7 Calder Cup Playoff games as the Griffins reached the Central Division Finals.
Drafted by the Red Wings in the sixth round (159th overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Söderblom has accumulated 9 goals and 10 assists for 19 points in 47 NHL games since 2022-23. He has also tallied 23 goals and 31 assists for 54 points in 119 AHL games with the Griffins.
Prior to his North American career, Söderblom played in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Frölunda HC, based in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden. In 90 SHL games from 2019-22, he recorded 24 goals and 14 assists for 38 points, helping Frölunda HC win a Champions Hockey League title in 2020. He also played for Frölunda HC's junior teams, amassing 76 points (40 goals, 36 assists) in 87 games with the under-20 squad, 53 points (26 goals, 27 assists) in 60 games with the under-18 team, and 93 points (62 goals, 31 assists) in 78 games at the under-16 level. Söderblom has also represented Sweden at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman has now completed his offseason tasks regarding restricted free agents, with Söderblom's signing following extensions for Albert Johansson and Jonatan Berggren earlier in the week. Söderblom, who was coming off his entry-level contract, will be a restricted free agent at the end of his new contract.
