Five supporters of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were detained on Saturday, July 5, 2025, following an attack on the office of investor Sushil Kedia in Worli, Mumbai. The incident stemmed from Kedia's social media post where he criticized Raj Thackeray and declared his refusal to learn Marathi, including a direct challenge, "kya karna hai bol?".
Kedia's post was triggered by incidents of violence related to the non-use of Marathi and the ongoing controversy surrounding the imposition of Hindi and the three-language policy in state schools. In his post, Kedia stated that despite living in Mumbai for 30 years, he doesn't know Marathi properly. He further said that due to Thackeray's "gross misconduct," he had resolved not to learn the language.
The MNS supporters, expressing their anger over Kedia's remarks, gathered outside his office and chanted slogans in support of Raj Thackeray and Marathi pride. They threw coconuts at the glass door entrance of Kedia's office. Videos of the attack quickly spread on social media. Security personnel at the site were seen attempting to stop the attack, while office staff tried to lower the shutters to prevent further damage.
Following the attack, police detained five MNS supporters for questioning. A Worli police station official stated that further legal action would be taken.
The incident prompted a response from MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande, who told Kedia to focus on his business and not "act like our father". He warned Kedia against insulting Marathi in Maharashtra.
Hours after the attack, Sushil Kedia issued a public apology, retracting his earlier statements. He said that his social media post was made under stress and emotional duress, due to mental pressure from recent acts of violence against non-Marathi speakers. He said he regretted his remarks and wished to withdraw them. Kedia elaborated that he only uses Marathi in casual settings and that he is fluent in other Indian languages.
