Assam has been recognized as a leading state in utilizing the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) solution for intelligence purposes, significantly contributing to peace and security within the region. This acknowledgment comes directly from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. Assam's proactive adoption of NATGRID has demonstrably enhanced intelligence operations, aiding in maintaining law and order across the state.
NATGRID is an integrated intelligence database structure designed to counter terrorism. It connects databases of various core security agencies under the Government of India, collecting and analyzing comprehensive patterns from 21 different organizations that can be readily accessed by security agencies around the clock. The platform enables law enforcement agencies to access and analyze data seamlessly. This includes information related to banking, travel, identity, telecommunications, and more, facilitating real-time analysis. It also has access to the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), a database that links crime information, including First Information Reports (FIRs), across approximately 14,000 police stations in India.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a letter from the CEO of NATGRID, Piyush Goyal, highlighting Assam's consistent performance between January and June 2025. In the letter dated July 3, 2025, Goyal lauded Assam, along with Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, for their consistent and effective usage of the intelligence platform during this period. The NATGRID CEO praised Assam for its “consistent usage” and its role in “operationalizing data-driven policing tools”. The Ministry of Home Affairs has urged other states to ramp up their usage of NATGRID by organizing more training and feedback sessions, as well as appointing nodal officers to oversee implementation, offering dedicated training support upon request.
NATGRID seeks to be the one-stop destination for security and intelligence agencies to access databases related to immigration entry and exit, banking, and telephone details of suspects on a secured platform. It facilitates real-time information exchange, which is essential for intelligence operations and investigations.
The National Intelligence Grid came into existence after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The project aims to strengthen India's counterterrorism and intelligence-gathering mechanisms. With this achievement, Assam continues to stand at the forefront of adopting advanced technological solutions to maintain law and order, reaffirming its commitment to national security goals.
The system is accessible to 11 central agencies and police departments across all states and Union Territories. Access to the platform is granted to authorized personnel only on a case-to-case basis for investigations into suspected cases of terrorism. The data infrastructure has adequate safeguards, and stringent protocols have been implemented to prevent unauthorized data access. The end-to-end encrypted portal can be accessed only after proper authorization and authentication.
