India's boxing contingent is making a strong statement at the World Boxing Cup, with multiple athletes poised to compete for gold medals. The tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan, is the second and final of the two scheduled World Boxing Cup meets for the year.

Current Medal Count and Standout Performances

As of July 4, 2025, Nupur has advanced to the final in the women's 80+kg category. Abhinash Jamwal has also secured a spot in the semi-finals in the men's 65kg category. Hitesh Gulia and Sakshi had previously secured semi-final spots, adding to India's growing medal count. Hitesh, already a gold medalist from the Brazil leg of the World Boxing Cup 2025, dominated his quarter-final match against Kazakhstan's Almaz Orozbekov, winning 5-0 in the men's 70kg category. Sakshi also delivered a strong performance, defeating Brazil's Tatiana Regina de Jesus Chagas by unanimous decision in the women's 54kg category.

Minakshi (women's 48kg), Pooja Rani (women's 80kg), and Sanju (women's 60kg) had previously confirmed medals by advancing to the semi-finals. Anamika (women's 51kg) remains in contention after reaching the quarter-finals. However, Neeraj Phogat (65kg) and Anamika (51kg) saw their campaigns end in the quarter-finals.

Earlier Success in Brazil

The World Boxing Cup series has already seen success for India, with the team securing six medals at the Brazil leg of the competition. Hitesh Gulia won a gold medal, becoming the first Indian boxer to achieve this feat at the World Boxing Cup. Abhinash Jamwal secured a silver medal, while Jadumani Singh Mandengbam, Manish Rathore, Sachin, and Vishal each won bronze medals. Hitesh credited a 10-day preparation camp in Brazil for helping him and the team.

Looking Ahead

With several boxers in contention for gold at the Astana meet, India is poised to add to its medal tally. The top boxers from these meets will qualify for the World Boxing Cup Finals, scheduled to be held in New Delhi, India, in November. This series is organized by World Boxing, which has been officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee, paving the way for boxing's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
