Suspended Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leader Rajanya Haldar has alleged that misogyny is widespread among student leaders, stating, "There are many other Monojit Mishras". Her statement references Manojit Mishra, the prime suspect in the recent law college gangrape case in Kolkata. Haldar's remarks highlight concerns about the treatment of women within the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Haldar, the former TMCP president at Jadavpur University, was suspended in October of last year after posting on social media about a short film she starred in that depicted violence against women. The film drew parallels to a rape-murder case at R G Kar Hospital last August, sparking controversy.
On Friday, Haldar accused some student leaders of sharing indecent AI-generated images of her. She claimed these individuals use such tactics to blackmail female union members, offering them desirable positions within the student union. Haldar stated that she informed senior party members about intimidation by some student leaders, who tarnish the party's reputation and overshadow the achievements of Mamata Banerjee's government. She believes these "misogynist males should not be identified with any particular party".
Trinankur Bhattacharya, TMCP state president, said that Haldar had not raised these issues with him before. He assured that the party would take action if she provided concrete evidence and an internal investigation proved her allegations. Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim also commented on the situation.
Manojit Mishra, the individual Haldar referenced, has a history of alleged misconduct. He was reportedly removed from the TMCP unit leadership in 2021 for rowdyism but later returned as a contractual employee. Some reports indicate that Mishra was the TMCP unit president in the college before he passed out. A former student alleged that Mishra had been accused of ransacking CCTVs and abducting a student from a rival TMCP faction. He was reportedly suspended twice but was later appointed as a clerical staff member by the college's governing body. Mishra formed a gang of students called "Team MM," according to the former student.
Following the gangrape allegations, the college administration expelled Mishra, along with two other accused students, and terminated his employment. Another student has also accused Mishra of molestation, alleging that he locked her in a room, undressed her, and pulled her hair. Multiple complaints of molestation, harassment, physical violence, and extortion have reportedly been filed against him over the years.
The incident has sparked public condemnation, with much of it directed at the Trinamool Congress. Opposition leaders have criticized the TMC for allegedly enabling a culture of impunity within educational institutions.
