A video circulating online showing the burning of the Indian national flag, the Tricolour, at a garbage dump in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, has triggered a police investigation and sparked outrage across the political spectrum.
The incident occurred near the office of ward 50, an area where the civic body regularly burns garbage. The footage shows the flags being consumed by flames along with other waste materials.
News of the desecration prompted immediate responses from political leaders. A delegation comprising members of both the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) approached the police, demanding strict action against those responsible. The Congress delegation was led by party spokesperson Vivek Tripathi, while BJP ward 50 corporator Sushma Babisha also joined in the call for accountability.
Vivek Tripathi has placed blame on civic staffers, alleging that they carelessly disposed of the national flags. He asserted that such an act constitutes a serious offense and an insult to national pride.
In response to the complaints, the Shahpura police station has initiated a probe. Sub-inspector Harish Gujarbos confirmed that two complaints have been received and that CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to identify the individuals involved. Authorities have not yet determined whether the burning of the flags was intentional or accidental.
The incident has elicited strong reactions online, with many people demanding strict punishment for disrespecting the national flag.
The Flag Code of India outlines the regulations and guidelines for the proper display and treatment of the national flag. It emphasizes the importance of upholding the dignity and honor of the flag. The code stipulates that the National Flag should occupy a position of honor and be distinctly placed. A damaged or disheveled flag should not be displayed. Discarding the flag improperly or in a disrespectful manner is considered a violation of the code. The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1971 further reinforces the legal framework against any act of disrespect towards the national flag.
