As the world celebrates his 90th birthday on July 6, 2025, the Dalai Lama has shared a message emphasizing compassion, peace of mind, and his continued commitment to serving humanity. In a statement released on July 5, 2025, he conveyed his appreciation for the well-wishers and friends, including Tibetan communities, who are gathering for celebrations and engaging in initiatives that highlight compassion, warm-heartedness, and altruism.
Despite the global celebrations, the Dalai Lama humbly stated, "I am just a simple Buddhist monk; I don't normally engage in birthday celebrations". However, acknowledging the events organized in his honor, he shared his thoughts on the importance of cultivating a good heart and being compassionate towards everyone, not just those near and dear. He believes that this approach is vital for achieving peace of mind and contributing to a better world.
In his message, the Dalai Lama reiterated his ongoing dedication to promoting human values, religious harmony, and drawing attention to the ancient Indian wisdom that explains the workings of the mind and emotions. He also emphasized the significance of Tibetan culture and heritage, which, in his view, has much to offer the world through its focus on peace of mind and compassion. He draws determination and courage from the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters like Shantideva, striving to uphold the aspiration to dispel the miseries of the world.
During a prayer ceremony with followers, the Dalai Lama expressed his hope to live another 30 to 40 years, continuing to serve sentient beings and the Buddha Dharma. He referenced the blessings of Avalokiteshvara, a Buddhist spiritual protector, in his aspiration to reach the age of 130.
Amidst speculation about his succession, the Dalai Lama has also clarified the process of choosing his reincarnation. He stated that the Gaden Phodrang Foundation, established by him, will be the sole authority to recognize his future reincarnation, ensuring the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution. He stressed that "no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter".
Celebrations are underway in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, as devotees commemorate the Dalai Lama's milestone birthday. Prayers for his long life have been conducted, focusing on the Song of Immortality. The Dalai Lama's message serves as a reminder of his enduring commitment to peace, compassion, and the well-being of all beings.
