Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel has showered praise on Shubman Gill's captaincy following a record-breaking Test match against England in Birmingham. Gill, who is currently captaining the Test team, has been under immense pressure to perform, but Morkel believes he has handled the expectations exceptionally well.

Gill's performance in the Birmingham Test was nothing short of spectacular. He registered scores of 269 and 161 across both innings. This performance made him the second batter with the highest aggregate of runs (430) in a Test match, only surpassed by Graham Gooch (456) against India at Lord's in 1990. Gill also became the second batter to record 150-plus scores in both innings of a Test, a feat previously achieved by Allan Border against Pakistan in 1980. Furthermore, Gill's achievement marked the first instance of a 250-plus and 150-plus score in a Test by a batter.

Morkel highlighted Gill's confidence and connection with the team. He noted that Gill has been confident both on and off the field, connecting well with his teammates during training. Morkel emphasized the importance of a captain leading by example, stating that Gill has been "exceptional" in this regard.

Gill has also broken a decade-old captaincy record previously held by Virat Kohli. Gill has now scored the most runs by an Indian batter in his debut series as captain. During the Edgbaston Test, Gill surpassed Kohli's record of 449 runs in a debut series as captain from 2014-15. In the first two Tests of the series against England, Gill has amassed 585 runs. Moreover, Gill became the first Indian captain to score 250 in Tests. He now holds the record for the most runs for an Indian captain in a Test match.

Dinesh Karthik has lauded Shubman Gill, noting that he is stepping into the legacy of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Karthik pointed out that Gill's recent performance addresses concerns about his ability to score runs away from India. He also praised Gill's mental fortitude and hunger for big runs. Karthik stated that Gill has been working on getting his bat in front of his pads, which has improved his technique against the ball.

Gill's accomplishments in the Edgbaston Test have solidified his place in cricket history. He became the first player to score 250 and 150+ in the same match. His aggregate of 430 runs in the game places him in an elite group, with only Graham Gooch having scored more in a single Test. Gill's 269 is the seventh-highest score by an Indian in Tests. He also became the seventh batter to score centuries in his first two Tests as captain.

Shubman Gill's childhood coach, Sukhvinder Singh Tinku, has expressed his belief in Gill's potential to become India's captain. Tinku has known Gill since 2005-2006 and has witnessed his growth as a cricketer. He said that Gill understands the game and knows how to correct his mistakes, which sets him apart from other players. Tinku added that Gill's patience and decision-making abilities are exceptional.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has also voiced his support for Shubman Gill's captaincy and requested the BCCI to back him. Shastri emphasized Gill's maturity and believes he has the potential to achieve great things. He urged the BCCI to stick with Gill for three years, regardless of the series outcome, to allow him to deliver his best. Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna praised Gill's ability to create a positive dressing room environment and manage his bowlers effectively.
