SC Seeks Ex-CJI Chandrachud Removal From Official Bungalow
The Supreme Court administration has requested the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to urgently take possession of Bungalow No. 5 on Krishna Menon Marg, Lutyens' Delhi, which is the official residence designated for the Chief Justice of India. The current occupant, former CJI Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, has exceeded the permissible stay period, nearly eight months after his retirement on November 10, 2024. The Supreme Court administration seeks the bungalow's return to the court's housing pool.
According to government rules, a retired Chief Justice is entitled to stay in a Type VII government bungalow rent-free for up to six months. Justice Chandrachud had been occupying the Type VIII bungalow, which is designated for a sitting CJI. Two successive CJIs, Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Bhushan R. Gavai, opted to stay in their previously allotted bungalows, allowing Justice Chandrachud to remain at the Krishna Menon Marg residence.
Justice Chandrachud has cited personal circumstances for the delay, stating that his daughters need a home with special needs. He also mentioned that the alternative accommodation allotted to him required significant renovation after being disused for years. He had initially requested to stay until April 30, 2025, which was granted with a monthly license fee. Following this, he made an oral request for a further extension until May 31, which was granted with a firm caveat that no additional extension would be permitted. The extension granted to him expired on May 31, 2025, while the six-month grace period ended earlier, on May 10.
Elon Musk Launches New Political Party
Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party called the "America Party". This decision follows a public disagreement with U.S. President Donald Trump over a recently signed tax cut and spending bill, which Musk has fiercely criticized.
Musk conducted an online poll on X, where a majority of respondents supported the creation of a new political entity. He stated that the "America Party" aims to restore freedom and address governmental waste, challenging what he describes as the nation's "one-party system". Musk had previously expressed his intention to unseat lawmakers who supported the budget bill, which he believes will bankrupt the United States.
Musk has suggested a strategy for the party to focus on a small number of Senate and House seats to become the deciding vote on key legislation. However, creating a new political party with national ambitions faces significant hurdles, including complicated state laws and time-consuming ballot access rules.
