India is set to make a strong bid to host both the 2029 and 2031 World Athletics Championships, signaling the nation's growing ambition in the global sports arena. This strategic move aims to secure hosting rights for one of these prestigious editions, reflecting India's commitment to promoting athletics and its aspirations to host the 2036 Olympics.

Adille Sumariwalla, a spokesperson for the national federation, confirmed that the bidding process would commence later this year. World Athletics, the sport's governing body, is scheduled to announce the hosts for both the 2029 and 2031 championships in September 2026. Member countries interested in hosting must express their interest by October 1, 2025, to be considered.

India's decision to bid for these major athletics events aligns with the Athletics Federation of India's (AFI) broader vision to bid for a series of high-profile competitions, with the ultimate goal of hosting the 2036 Olympics. This concerted effort underscores India's determination to establish itself as a prominent destination for global sporting events.

Sumariwalla, also a vice-president of World Athletics and former president of AFI, emphasized the strategic nature of the bid, stating, "We are going to do strategic bidding for 2029 and 2031 (Championships). Both editions will be awarded together, and whichever edition we get is fine". He also noted that there is ample time to prepare the bids, highlighting the meticulous planning and preparation involved.

The timeline for the bidding process includes an initial submission of application by April 1, 2026, with the final bid application due by August 5, 2026. The World Athletics Council will then announce the host cities for the 2029 and 2031 editions.

In addition to the World Athletics Championships, India is also bidding for the World Athletics Relays, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to attracting diverse athletics events. The country's commitment extends beyond hosting, with a focus on developing a robust sports ecosystem. This includes investments in sports science, nutrition, medicine, and rehabilitation to ensure Indian athletes are well-prepared for global competition.

India's sports economy is projected to grow significantly, with potential to reach $100 billion by 2027. This growth is underpinned by collaboration between the government and private sector to fund and manage sports initiatives, improve facilities, and provide financial support for athletes.

The recent success of Indian athletes at the Asian Athletics Championships, where they achieved their best-ever overseas haul, highlights the country's emerging talent and potential. This success is attributed to a fearless new generation of athletes and the development of a more structured and ethically sound athletic ecosystem.

With strategic bidding for major events, a focus on athlete development, and a growing sports economy, India is poised to make a significant impact on the world athletics stage. The outcome of the 2029 and 2031 World Athletics Championships bid will be a key indicator of India's progress in realizing its sporting ambitions.
