Gurugram Could Become India's Disneyland Destination: Exploring Plans for a New Entertainment Hub in the City.

Gurugram, a city in Haryana, may soon be home to India's first Disneyland-style amusement park. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that the state government is in discussions with Disney officials to develop a 500-acre entertainment hub in Manesar near Pachgaon Chowk. The proposed location is strategically situated along the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway and the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor, ensuring easy accessibility from Delhi and other major cities in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Saini highlighted the economic, cultural, and social benefits that the Disneyland project would bring to Haryana and the entire country. He emphasized that the park would generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities and stimulate growth in the hospitality, entertainment, and real estate sectors in and around Manesar and Pachgaon. The Chief Minister also pointed to Gurugram's existing economic importance and infrastructure, along with the upcoming Global City project, as reasons for selecting the city as the location for Disneyland. The Global City project is a planned 1,000-acre mini-city spread across sectors 36, 36B, 37, and 37B.

The announcement of the Disneyland project has sparked comparisons to a similar, unsuccessful attempt in 1989, when the Om Prakash Chautala-led government proposed a Disney-style park over 28,000 acres in Gurugram. That project was eventually shelved due to opposition from political parties and farmers. INLD national president Abhay Singh Chautala has criticized the current BJP government, which supported the INLD in 1989 but sided with Congress to oppose the project back then.

Despite the previous setback, the Haryana government is confident that the new Disneyland project will succeed. State tourism officials stated that land acquisition and administrative work are already underway, and discussions with global partners are progressing. The government is also expanding its cultural calendar by hosting the Surajkund Crafts Mela three times a year, with the addition of a Diwali Fair and a Book Fair.

If the Gurugram Disneyland plan proceeds, the city would join a list of other global destinations that host Disney-themed parks, including California and Florida in the United States, Paris in France, Tokyo in Japan, and Hong Kong.

While the Haryana government has announced its plans, The Walt Disney Company has not yet released an official statement confirming its involvement. A senior government official indicated that the announcement was made after initial communications with relevant parties, but formal confirmation from Disney is still pending.
