With the 2025 NHL Draft in the rearview mirror and development camp underway, speculation is rampant regarding the Philadelphia Flyers' roster for the 2025-26 season. A key question revolves around whether top prospect Porter Martone, drafted sixth overall in 2025, will make the cut.

Forwards

The Flyers' forward lines could see a significant injection of new talent. A dream scenario projects a top line of Robertson-Nečas-Michkov. The acquisition of Trevor Zegras from Anaheim adds another dimension to the Flyers' offensive capabilities, with the possibility of him centering a line with Matvei Michkov.

Martone's potential inclusion adds another layer of intrigue. The 18-year-old winger, who tied for seventh in OHL scoring with 98 points, believes he is a natural fit for the Flyers. "My game can fit the Flyers' mould, and I believe I was meant to be a Flyer," Martone said. He is determined to earn a spot on the opening night roster. General Manager Danny Briere has even mentioned Martone as a potential injury replacement for Tyson Foerster.

Other forward prospects who could compete for roster spots include Jett Luchanko, Jack Nesbitt, Alex Bump, and Nikita Grebenkin. Luchanko, drafted 13th overall in 2024, got a taste of NHL action last season. Bump and Grebenkin could also push for roles on the third or fourth lines.

Given these factors, a possible forward group could look something like this:

  • Robertson - Nečas - Michkov
  • Foerster - Cates - Konecny
  • Shabanov - Couturier - Mantha
  • Pelletier - Poehling - Hathaway
  • Martone/McGinn/Dorwart

Defense

The Flyers' defense is expected to look similar to the previous season. Cam York, a restricted free agent, is likely to be re-signed and will be a key piece in the top four alongside Travis Sanheim or Jamie Drysdale. Nick Seeler is also expected to be a fixture in the top four.

Prospects like Oliver Bonk, Hunter McDonald, and Emil Andrae are vying for spots on the blue line. Andrae is likely to be a full-time NHLer. With Rasmus Ristolainen recovering from an injury, Helge Grans could also get an opportunity.

A possible defensive alignment:

  • Sanheim - York
  • Hague - Drysdale
  • Seeler - Ristolainen/Andrae

Goaltending

Goaltending remains a significant question mark for the Flyers. Sam Ersson is not considered a 1A goalie but could be a solid backup. The Flyers recently signed Dan Vladar to a two-year deal. Alexei Kolosov, currently playing in the KHL, is another option, though there may be pressure for him to remain in his home country.

Martone's Potential Impact

Porter Martone brings a unique blend of skill and physicality. At 6-foot-3 and over 200 pounds, he possesses the size and strength to be a power forward in the NHL. He also has excellent playmaking ability and hockey sense. Martone is known for his competitiveness and agitating style of play.

"I wouldn't say that I'm too friendly. I definitely have an agitating style of play," Martone said. "But that's just who I am. I'm a competitor who wants to win every night. I play a little pesky game, and the people who see me off the ice wouldn't recognize me on the ice."

Martone's confidence and determination are evident. "Right now, my goal is to make the NHL and have a big summer," Martone stated. "Really gain some strength in the lower body and come into camp and try to earn my spot… For me, I want to go and play a full regular season in the NHL next year."

While there's no guarantee Martone will make the Flyers' opening night roster, his talent, size, and drive make him a strong contender. His inclusion would undoubtedly add excitement and physicality to the Flyers' lineup.
