England faced a crushing defeat against India in the recent Test match, despite a remarkable performance from wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith. India's bowlers proved too difficult to handle, securing victory and leveling the series.

England found themselves in deep trouble early in their first innings, reeling at 84-5. Mohammed Siraj's impressive spell saw him take two wickets in two balls, including the crucial wicket of Ben Stokes for a golden duck. This brought Jamie Smith to the crease, who then started a counter-attacking innings.

Smith, displaying resilience after a long stint behind the wickets, launched an aggressive assault on the Indian bowlers. He took apart Prasidh Krishna in one over, smashing 22 runs. Smith reached his century in just 80 balls, just four shy of equalling Gilbert Jessop's record for the fastest Test century by an England batter. He continued to dominate, surpassing Alec Stewart's previous highest score for an England wicketkeeper of 173, finishing with an unbeaten 184. His innings included 14 fours and three sixes.

Smith formed a formidable partnership with Harry Brook, adding 303 runs for the sixth wicket. Brook also played a fine innings, scoring 158. However, after Brook's dismissal, England's innings collapsed, losing their last five wickets for just 20 runs. Siraj finished with 6-70, while Akash Deep took 4-88.

Despite Smith's record-breaking performance, India maintained control of the match. India had established a first-innings lead of 180 runs, thanks to Shubman Gill's magnificent 269. At the end of the third day, they extended their lead to 244.

In the second innings, Smith continued his excellent form, scoring a half-century. In the process, Smith broke another record, with the most runs in a Test match for an English wicketkeeper. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent the inevitable. Akash Deep dismissed Smith for 88, completing his five-wicket haul. The short ball strategy worked for Akash Deep as Smith pulled the ball only to find the fielder at deep square-leg.

Ultimately, England were unable to resist India's strong bowling attack, led by Akash Deep. Despite Jamie Smith's outstanding individual performance, England fell to defeat. Smith's scores of 184 not out and 88 have given him a total of 272 runs in the match, the highest ever by an England wicketkeeper in a Test.
