Shubman Gill has lauded Akash Deep for his match-winning performance in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Gill, leading the team in his first Test as captain, witnessed India's historic 336-run victory, their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston. The victory leveled the series at 1-1, setting the stage for an exciting contest in the remaining matches.

Akash Deep's performance was instrumental in India's triumph. Replacing Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep rose to the occasion, taking 4 wickets in the first innings and an impressive 6 wickets in the second, totaling 10 wickets in the match. His efforts earned him accolades, including a five-wicket haul in the final innings. Gill praised Akash Deep's wholehearted bowling, acknowledging his significant contribution to the team's success.

Gill himself played a crucial role in India's victory, scoring 269 runs in the first innings and 161 in the second. His exceptional batting performance set numerous records, including the highest score by an Indian captain in Tests. Gill's aggregate of 430 runs in the match is the second-highest by any batter in a single Test at Edgbaston. His twin centuries placed him in an elite club of players with centuries in both innings of a Test. Gill was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.

The Edgbaston Test witnessed India breaking a 58-year-old jinx, securing their first Test win at the venue in nine attempts. The victory was particularly significant as it came without the presence of key bowler Jasprit Bumrah. Mohammed Siraj also contributed significantly with a total of 7 wickets in the match.

Gill's captaincy was also commendable, with his strategic bowling changes and field placements contributing to India's dominance. He became the seventh batter to score centuries in his first two Tests as captain. After the victory, Gill celebrated with Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, taking a stump as a souvenir.

The win at Edgbaston marks a significant moment in Indian cricket history. It demonstrates the team's ability to win anywhere, even without key players. With Jasprit Bumrah expected to return for the next Test at Lord's, and potentially Jofra Archer for England, the series is poised for further excitement. The third Test will begin on July 10.
