On Sunday, July 6, 2025, access to the official X (formerly Twitter) accounts of Reuters and TRT World was restored in India after being briefly withheld. The accounts had been blocked for users in India, displaying a message stating, "Account withheld. @Reuters has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand".
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) stated that the Indian government had not requested the takedown. A government spokesperson clarified, "There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold Reuters and we are continuously working with X to resolve the problem". X, owned by Elon Musk, indicates on its help page that such messages appear when content is withheld due to a valid legal request, such as a court order or local laws.
Sources suggest that the blocking may have been related to a previous order issued during "Operation Sindoor" in May, where a demand was made to block several hundred accounts. While many accounts were blocked at the time, the Reuters handle was not. It appears X may have acted on this older request, leading to the recent блокировка. The government has contacted X to seek clarification and resolve the issue.
The official accounts of other media organizations, including China's Global Times, were also briefly blocked. The government stated that there was no current requirement to withhold these accounts either and is working with X to restore access. While Reuters' main X account and Reuters World handles were inaccessible, affiliated accounts such as Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Asia, and Reuters China remained accessible in India.
