National Conference President Farooq Abdullah joined a Muharram procession in Srinagar, wearing a keffiyeh to show solidarity with Palestine and Iran. The procession took place in the old city of Srinagar on Sunday. Abdullah emphasized the need for Muslims to unite against all forms of evil to achieve global peace.
Abdullah, along with his grandsons Zamir and Zahir Abdullah, participated in the Zadibal procession and distributed water to mourners as a sign of respect and unity. He highlighted the sacrifices of Imam Hussain (AS) and the values of peace, brotherhood, and gratitude taught by Islam. He described Islam as a religion promoting peace and brotherhood. He also drew inspiration from Karbala, stating that it symbolizes Islam's resilience against adversity.
The keffiyeh, a black-and-white patterned Arab headgear, is a symbol of Palestinian nationalism and resistance. Abdullah's choice to wear it was a clear message of support for the Islamic world, including Palestinians and Iranians. He said that Karbala gave Islam hope that it would survive against all odds.
In a separate event, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha participated in a Muharram procession in the Botakadal area of the old city. He paid tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions, emphasizing their sacrifices for peace, love, and compassion. Sinha also served refreshments to mourners.
Meanwhile, Shia leader Aga Syed Mohammad Hadi cautioned the government against arresting youths who participated in Muharram processions. He said that India is a democratic country, and Shia mourners should not face arrest or intimidation after Muharram.
