Drone technology has emerged as a central point of discussion in recent talks between India and Argentina, signaling a potential new avenue for collaboration between the two nations. This focus came to light during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Argentina, where he met with President Javier Milei to explore opportunities for cooperation in various sectors.
Argentina has expressed considerable interest in leveraging drone technology for a variety of applications. These include tackling illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing activities, particularly within Argentina's exclusive economic zones. Drones offer a cost-effective solution for monitoring vast maritime areas and identifying potential infringements, presenting a significant advantage over traditional methods like expensive helicopter surveillance.
Beyond maritime security, Argentina is also looking at drones for cattle management and increasing agricultural productivity. Drones equipped with sensors and imaging capabilities can assist in monitoring livestock, assessing crop health, and optimizing resource allocation in farming. Furthermore, the potential use of drones for border surveillance and monitoring high-tension power transmission lines was also discussed. Using drones to inspect power lines is safer and more efficient than using helicopters.
India, on its part, has showcased its advancements and experiences in drone technology, including the "Namo Drone Didi" scheme. This initiative likely aims to empower women by training them to operate and maintain drones for agricultural purposes, thus promoting both technological adoption and gender inclusion.
The discussions also highlighted the potential for private-sector participation in the drone technology sector, with Argentina seeking cost-effective solutions for applications in agriculture, energy, border security, and infrastructure inspection. A large Argentine business delegation is expected to visit India to explore collaboration opportunities with Indian startup founders in drone technology and innovation.
This collaboration extends beyond drones. India has invited Argentina to join the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), which aims to conserve seven big cat species, including the jaguar, which is native to Argentina. This invitation signals a move towards environmental diplomacy and a commitment to sharing experiences and building capacity in wildlife conservation.
The focus on drone technology and the invitation to join the IBCA reflect a broader effort to strengthen the strategic ties between India and Argentina. These multifaceted relations have strengthened over the years, encompassing political, economic, defense, mining, cultural, and scientific & technological cooperation. Both countries share values, mutual respect, and a commitment to the rule of law. In February 2019, India-Argentina relations were elevated to a Strategic Partnership. In 2024, the two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations.
India has also expressed interest in Argentina's lithium reserves, which are crucial for India's green energy transition. Argentina is part of the Lithium Triangle, and India is looking to secure critical minerals for its clean energy ambitions. Moreover, India is offering support for the maintenance and upgrade of Argentina's helicopter fleet, leveraging India's expertise in Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO).
