Reuters' official account on X (formerly Twitter) was restored in India on Sunday, after being blocked for nearly 24 hours. The account's unavailability sparked speculation, and the Indian government intervened, clarifying they had not requested the takedown.
The Reuters account became inaccessible to users in India on Saturday evening, displaying a message stating it was "withheld in India in response to a legal demand". This message also appeared on the X handles of other international media outlets, including TRT World (Turkey) and Global Times (China).
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) stated that the Indian government had not issued any legal requirement to withhold the Reuters handle. An official spokesperson for MeitY said, "There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold Reuters handle. We are continuously working with X to resolve the problem". The government asked X, owned by Elon Musk, for an explanation regarding the blocking. Shortly after the government's intervention, access to the Reuters account was restored.
X's Help Centre indicates that content is sometimes withheld due to valid legal requests, such as court orders or local laws, which can apply to entire accounts or specific posts. The platform's policy states that it responds to valid legal requests. In similar situations involving the accounts of Global Times and TRT World, the government also stated that there was no current requirement to withhold those handles and that they were working with X to resolve the issue.
