On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary, hailing him as the "immortal son of the nation". Modi lauded Mookerjee's lifelong dedication to India's unity, pride, and development.
In a post on X, PM Modi conveyed his respect, emphasizing that Mookerjee sacrificed his life to protect the honor, dignity, and pride of the country. He added that Mookerjee's ideals and principles are invaluable in building a developed and self-reliant India. The Prime Minister also shared a video clip highlighting Dr. Mookerjee's life, values, and vision for India. Modi noted Mookerjee's belief that a nation could only be secure through its own energy and his immense faith in the nation's resources and people.
Reflecting on Mookerjee's post-Independence contributions, Modi stated that his vision helped lift the country from despair and disappointment. As the first Minister for Industry and Supply, Mookerjee drafted India's first industrial policy and believed that collaboration between the government, educational institutions, and industrial organizations would lead India to achieve economic independence. Modi also praised Mookerjee's forward-thinking approach and his contributions to women's empowerment, education, and shaping India's nuclear policy.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid homage, recalling Mookerjee's powerful stance against the dual governance system in Jammu and Kashmir. He quoted Mookerjee's conviction that "in one country, two constitutions, two heads, and two flags will not work," highlighting his dedication to an undivided India.
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party, is remembered as a staunch nationalist, visionary political leader, and educationist committed to India's sovereignty and progress.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister J.P. Nadda, and other leaders also paid floral tributes to Dr. Mookerjee at the Central Hall of Samvidhaan Sadan. Railways and Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw lauded Mookerjee's advocacy for Indian languages, noting that the New Education Policy realizes Mookerjee's vision for preserving and promoting them. Vaishnaw also stated that Mookerjee's struggle was fulfilled in 2019 with the abrogation of Article 370 from the Indian Constitution. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted Mookerjee's message of prioritizing the country above party politics and his stance on Kashmir, noting that the construction of the new Chenab Bridge is a step toward realizing his vision. A booklet containing Dr. Mookerjee's profile, published by the Lok Sabha Secretariat in both Hindi and English, was also presented.
