Sachin Tendulkar has expressed his elation following India's commanding 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston, a win that also marked India's first-ever Test win at the venue. The victory leveled the series 1-1. Tendulkar lauded Shubman Gill for leading the team from the front, calling his performance "Shublime".
Shubman Gill, at 25 years and 301 days old, has become the fourth-youngest Indian captain to win a Test match. Sachin Tendulkar remains the youngest, having achieved the feat against Australia in 1996 at the age of 23 years and 174 days.
Gill's response to the victory, characterized by "quiet efficiency, level-headedness, and cool in duress," reflects his captaincy style. His leadership was evident in his decision-making, such as promoting Washington Sundar, which led to a crucial wicket. Gill starred with the bat, scoring 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second.
Sachin Tendulkar praised the contributions of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja, highlighting their crucial runs in the second innings. He also commended the bowlers for sticking to their plans, singling out debutant Akash Deep for his outstanding performance. Akash Deep took 10 wickets across both innings, becoming only the second Indian bowler to achieve this feat in a Test in England, after Chetan Sharma in 1986. Tendulkar described Akash Deep's delivery to dismiss Joe Root as "the ball of the series". Akash Deep's 6/99 in the second innings sealed India's win.
Sourav Ganguly, however, tempered the celebration by reminding everyone that the victory was achieved without Jasprit Bumrah. Ganguly had earlier emphasized Bumrah's importance for India in the Test series against England. He advised Shubman Gill to use Bumrah wisely, suggesting short spells to keep him fit for the entire series. Ganguly also stressed the importance of other bowlers, like Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh, stepping up. According to Ganguly, Gill needs to avoid bowling Bumrah "into the ground". He suggested limiting Bumrah to 12-13 overs a day. Ganguly believes that if Bumrah remains fit for four of the five Tests, India has a good chance of winning the series.
Shubman Gill has confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah will be back for the third Test at Lord's. Despite being without key players like Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav in the second Test, India leveled the series.
