BJP MP Dinesh Sharma has declared that Uttar Pradesh is no longer a "lawless" state but has transformed into the "best state". Sharma's statement highlights the perceived improvements in law and order and overall governance in Uttar Pradesh under the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) leadership.
Sharma, a former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and ex-Mayor of Lucknow, has deep roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and is considered an approachable leader. He began his political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS, and later served as the Lucknow Mahanagar president. Progressing through the BJP ranks, he became the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the party's youth wing.
In 2004, Sharma played a key role in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Lok Sabha election campaign in Lucknow, serving as the convenor of Vajpayee's election office and a member of the election management committee. His political breakthrough came in 2006 when he was elected Mayor of Lucknow, a BJP stronghold with a significant presence of upper castes and Shia Muslims. Sharma secured a second mayoral term in 2012 with a substantial margin of 1.71 lakh votes.
In 2018, Sharma stirred controversy with his remarks suggesting that Sita was a "test-tube baby," drawing criticism and prompting the BJP's national leadership to advise him to exercise restraint in his speeches. While serving as Mayor of Lucknow, he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister in Yogi Adityanath's first cabinet in 2017. This move was seen as an attempt by the BJP to present a moderate face of the government, as Sharma was known to have a good rapport with Muslims and clerics.
However, Sharma was replaced by Brajesh Pathak, another Brahmin leader, in the Adityanath cabinet when the BJP returned to power in 2022. Subsequently, he was sent to the Rajya Sabha in September 2023.
Sharma's recent assertion about Uttar Pradesh's transformation comes at a time when the state government has been actively promoting its achievements in improving law and order, infrastructure development, and economic growth. The BJP has often highlighted the perceived failures of previous governments in maintaining law and order, contrasting it with the current administration's efforts to create a safer and more secure environment for citizens.
