Gautam Gambhir's Impact Praised by Shastri: India Victorious at Edgbaston, Even Without Bumrah's Presence.

Ravi Shastri, known for his outspoken commentary, had to eat his words after India's remarkable 336-run victory over England in the second Test at Edgbaston. The win, which leveled the series 1-1, was particularly sweet, as it was India's first-ever Test win at Edgbaston in nine attempts. The victory was made even more impressive by the absence of premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for workload management.

Before the match, Shastri had openly questioned the decision to rest Bumrah, calling it "very hard to believe". He argued that Bumrah, the "best fast bowler in the world," should have played, especially considering the significance of the match. Shastri's criticism reflected concerns about India's ability to take 20 wickets on a flat Edgbaston surface without their pace spearhead.

However, the Indian team, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill, proved the doubters wrong. Stand-in pacer Akash Deep rose to the occasion, delivering a stunning 10-wicket match haul. Mohammed Siraj also contributed significantly, taking six wickets in the first innings. The duo's performance ensured that Bumrah's absence was not felt, as they picked up 17 of the 20 English wickets.

Gill led from the front with the bat, scoring 269 and 161, setting an example for the team. Gill was named Player of the Match. His leadership and the bowlers' performance helped India record their biggest-ever victory by runs in an away Test match.

Shastri, who was in the commentary box, couldn't help but acknowledge the turnaround. When the camera focused on Gambhir, who was sporting a rare smile, Shastri commented, "Don't see that smile too often, but he deserves every bit of it. There is no better feeling for a coach than when you bounce back almost immediately to keep the series alive". Shastri's words reflected a complete change of tune, acknowledging Gambhir's role in the team's success.

The victory was especially significant as India broke a 58-year-old Edgbaston jinx. It also demonstrated the team's resilience and ability to win anywhere, even without key players like Bumrah. Gill confirmed that Bumrah would return for the third Test at Lord's.

Shastri's initial criticism and subsequent praise highlight the unpredictable nature of cricket and the importance of backing team management decisions. Gambhir's calm and composed leadership, combined with bold selection choices like giving Akash Deep a chance, proved to be a winning formula. The win at Edgbaston has not only leveled the series but has also instilled confidence in the Indian team as they head into the remaining Test matches.

The relationship between Shastri and Gambhir has been subject to scrutiny in the past. However, Shastri's recent comments suggest a newfound respect for Gambhir's coaching abilities.
