Prithvi Shaw, the once-prodigious Indian batter, is set to represent Maharashtra in the upcoming 2025-26 domestic season, bringing an end to his long-standing association with Mumbai. The move comes after Shaw secured a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

Shaw, 25, conveyed his gratitude to the MCA for the opportunities he received during his time with Mumbai cricket. In a letter to the MCA, he expressed that this transition is a step forward in his cricketing journey, believing that playing under another State Association will contribute to his growth and development.

The decision to switch teams arrives after a challenging period in Shaw's career. After a promising start that included a century on his Test debut in 2018, Shaw has faced difficulties with injuries, fitness, and maintaining consistent form. Last season, he was dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad for disciplinary reasons. However, he did make a comeback in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), playing in the final on December 14, 2024, and contributing to Mumbai's title victory against Madhya Pradesh.

Despite being a part of the victorious SMAT campaign, Shaw was not included in the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad. He had a decent run in the SMAT, scoring 197 runs in nine games with a strike rate of 156.34.

Shaw's absence from the national side has also been prolonged, having last represented India in any format over two years ago. Furthermore, he went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, indicating a significant dip in his stock.

The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) President, Rohit Pawar, welcomed Shaw to the team and stated that his inclusion would add strength to the already talented squad, which includes experienced players such as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Mukesh Choudhary, and Rajneesh Gurbani.

Shaw has represented India in five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I. He captained the India U19 team to victory in the 2018 World Cup. He also holds the distinction of scoring a century on his Test debut against the West Indies.

Looking ahead, Shaw is expected to participate in the D.B. Deodhar Tournament, an intra-state competition that is important for Maharashtra's domestic selections.

In a statement, Shaw expressed his excitement about joining the Maharashtra team and playing alongside talented players. He believes that being part of a progressive setup will positively impact his cricketing journey and is grateful to the Mumbai Cricket Association for their support over the years.

Abhay Hadap, the MCA Secretary, acknowledged Shaw's exceptional talent and contributions to Mumbai cricket and wished him the best for his future endeavors.
