The former Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, has recently addressed concerns regarding his continued stay in the official CJI residence in Delhi, several months after his retirement in November 2024. Citing the unique needs of his two daughters, Priyanka and Mahi, who have a rare genetic disorder called nemaline myopathy, Justice Chandrachud explained that finding suitable accommodation has been a challenge.
Nemaline myopathy is a condition that causes degeneration of the muscles and motor skills, severely affecting the respiratory system and causing scoliosis, as well as issues related to swallowing, breathing, and speech. The former CJI emphasized that his daughters require round-the-clock attention and a home tailored to their specific needs, including modifications for wheelchair accessibility and a hygienic environment to protect Priyanka, who is susceptible to infections. An ICU setting has even been created at home to cater to their needs.
Justice Chandrachud, in an exclusive interview with NDTV, spoke about his daughters and how they have brought immense joy to his life and his wife, Kalpana Das. He mentioned that Priyanka and Mahi were undergoing education at the Sanskriti School in Delhi but could not continue due to their health conditions and now receive homeschooling. He also shared that the children are talented in music and art and are skilled chess players. The family shares a special bond with animals, being "pet parents to 11 cats," and the daughters' ethical lifestyle has led the family to adopt a vegan lifestyle.
The Supreme Court administration had communicated to the Centre regarding the delay in vacating the official bungalow, leading to social media discussions and some criticism. Justice Chandrachud clarified that he is aware of his public responsibilities and never intended to hold onto the government accommodation. He stated that he had been actively seeking alternative housing and had kept the Supreme Court administration informed of his efforts. He also considered renting a house, but finding a landlord willing to rent for a short period proved difficult.
According to reports, the government had allotted Justice Chandrachud a temporary accommodation, but it had been unused for two years and required renovation. He assured that he would move as soon as the house was ready. Meanwhile, he and his family continue to reside at the official CJI residence at 5, Krishna Menon Marg, New Delhi.
The former CJI also recounted his elder daughter Priyanka being in the ICU for 44 days in 2021 and again in January 2022. He noted the regular therapies his daughters require, including chest, respiratory, and neurological treatments, as well as pain and speech management. He also brought up that Priyanka is attached to a tracheostomy tube.
Despite the challenges, Justice Chandrachud and his wife are dedicated to providing a fulfilling life for their daughters. "For us parents, the world revolves around their well-being," he said, adding that his wife Kalpana is actively seeking information and contacts with specialists and caregivers worldwide to find a cure for their condition. They avoid traveling together without the children and focus on creating a positive and meaningful environment for them.
Justice Chandrachud's situation highlights the difficulties faced by families with special needs children in finding suitable and accessible housing. His dedication to his daughters' well-being, combined with his commitment to fulfilling his public responsibilities, underscores the complexities of balancing personal and professional life, especially after holding high office. He has packed his belongings and is ready to move as soon as the new accommodation is prepared to meet his daughters' needs.
