A 36-year-old man identified as Mahesh, an autorickshaw driver from Mysuru, was swept away by the strong currents of the Cauvery River in Karnataka's Mandya district on Sunday evening. The incident occurred near the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) area near Sarva Dharma Ashram in Srirangapatna. Mahesh was visiting the area for a picnic with friends.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that Mahesh was posing for a photo when he slipped and fell into the river. A video circulating on social media shows Mahesh stepping backwards, his foot hitting a raised ledge, causing him to lose his balance and fall. His friend, who was recording the video, screamed in shock as he witnessed the incident. The water level in the river was high, and the current was strong, causing Mahesh to be quickly swept away.
Emergency teams, including fire and emergency services personnel, have launched a search operation at the site to locate Mahesh. The incident has been registered under the jurisdiction of the KRS Police Station.
This incident highlights the dangers of taking photographs in precarious locations, especially near bodies of water with strong currents. It serves as a reminder to exercise caution and be aware of one's surroundings to prevent accidents.
In a separate incident on the same day in the Mandya district, two men riding a motorcycle died after their vehicle reportedly crashed into a bridge on the Visvesvaraya Canal within Koppa police station limits. According to police reports, the accident occurred around 2:30 pm when the rider lost control while crossing the bridge and hit the railing. Both men fell into the canal and died on the spot. A case has been registered, and the bodies were handed over to their families after post-mortem examinations.
