Following the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brasilia on Monday, July 7, 2025, for a state visit to Brazil. He was warmly welcomed by members of the Indian diaspora. The Prime Minister is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, focusing on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Upon his arrival in Brasilia, PM Modi was greeted at the airport by Brazil's Minister of Defence, Jose Mucio Monteiro Filho. A traditional Brazilian Samba Reggae performance added a musical touch to the welcome. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), highlighted the strengthening India-Brazil partnership, noting the warm reception by the Defence Minister and the Samba Reggae performance.
At the hotel, members of the Indian community gathered to welcome PM Modi, waving Indian flags and expressing their excitement. The Prime Minister interacted with the diaspora, including children who came to greet him. He also witnessed cultural and spiritual performances organized in his honor, appreciating the artists and interacting with them after the performances. A video shared by ANI on X (formerly Twitter) showed the vibrant welcome, with cultural dances and folk songs performed by the Indian diaspora. One performance was based on the theme of Operation Sindoor, with the patriotic song "Ye Desh Nahi Mitne Dunga" resonating through the venue. A Brazilian music group also performed devotional songs, showcasing India's rich spiritual and cultural values.
Members of the Indian community expressed their enthusiasm and pride in welcoming the Prime Minister. Vijay Solanki, a long-time resident of Brazil from Gujarat, shared his thrill and honor in welcoming PM Modi. Pooja, another member of the diaspora from Gujarat, expressed her excitement at meeting him.
PM Modi described his visit to Rio de Janeiro for the 17th BRICS Summit as "very productive". He commended President Lula and the Brazilian Government for their work in making the BRICS platform more effective. He also expressed confidence that his bilateral meetings with world leaders would boost India's friendship with various nations. During the BRICS Summit, discussions revolved around key global and regional security challenges.
During his state visit, PM Modi will engage in bilateral talks with President Lula, focusing on expanding the Strategic Partnership between India and Brazil. Key areas of discussion will include trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and people-to-people linkages.
PM Modi also held bilateral meetings with the Presidents of Bolivia and Uruguay on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. Discussions with Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora centered on collaboration in digital technology, critical minerals, healthcare, and space. With Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi, discussions focused on boosting cooperation in areas like trade, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, technology, and defence.
The Prime Minister emphasized India's commitment to strengthening ties with nations in the Global South. He also highlighted India's achievement in meeting its Paris climate commitments ahead of schedule. India's BRICS presidency next year will prioritize a "humanity first" approach.
