Google AI Search in India: A Comprehensive Guide to its Features and Functionality for All Users

Google has officially launched its AI Mode in Search for all users in India, marking a significant step in the evolution of how people access and interact with information online. This AI-powered search experience, previously available as an experiment within Google Labs, is now accessible to everyone in India across desktop and the Google app on Android and iOS. This means that users no longer need to sign up for Search Labs to access the feature.

AI Mode is designed to provide comprehensive, AI-generated responses to complex, multi-layered questions, complete with web links and follow-up capabilities. It's particularly useful for exploratory questions and complicated tasks that would typically require multiple searches, such as product comparisons, trip planning, and detailed how-to inquiries.

Here’s a breakdown of what AI Mode is and how it works:

What is AI Mode?

AI Mode is a new interface within Google Search that provides a more AI-driven experience. Google describes it as its "most powerful AI search experience yet," offering advanced reasoning and multimodality. It's designed to help users explore topics and receive comprehensive, AI-based answers, eliminating the need for extensive manual comparisons and analyses.

How it Works:

  • Gemini 2.5: AI Mode is powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5, Google's advanced large language model. This allows users to ask multifaceted questions and receive detailed responses.
  • Query Fan-Out Technique: AI Mode employs a "query fan-out" technique, breaking down complex questions into subtopics and issuing multiple simultaneous queries to delve deeper into web content. This helps uncover highly relevant content that directly addresses specific user questions.
  • Multimodal Capabilities: Recognizing the popularity of voice and visual search in India, AI Mode incorporates multimodal capabilities. Users can ask questions using text, voice commands, or by uploading images, making the search experience more accessible. To use voice search, users can simply tap the microphone icon and ask their query. Google Lens is also integrated, allowing users to ask complex questions about what they see by snapping or uploading a photo.
  • Integration of Information Systems: AI Mode combines advanced model capabilities with Google's information systems. This allows users to access high-quality web content and tap into real-time sources like the Knowledge Graph and shopping data for billions of products.
  • Follow-Up Questions: Users can ask follow-up questions to dig deeper into a topic, and AI Mode will remember the context of the conversation.
  • Citations: AI Mode provides detailed responses complete with inline citations, allowing users to verify the information and explore the sources.

Benefits of AI Mode:

  • Comprehensive Answers: AI Mode provides detailed, AI-powered responses that synthesize information from multiple sources.
  • Time-Saving: By providing a comprehensive overview of a topic, AI Mode eliminates the need to perform multiple searches.
  • Exploration and Discovery: AI Mode helps users explore topics more deeply and discover new information.
  • Accessibility: With multimodal capabilities, AI Mode is accessible to a wider range of users, including those who prefer voice or visual search.

Google emphasizes that helping users discover web content remains a central mission. AI Mode is designed to create new opportunities for content discovery while maintaining quality through core ranking systems and factuality approaches.

To access AI Mode, users will see a new tab for it appear in Search and in the search bar of the Google app. The feature is currently available in English. Note that users need to be logged into their Google account to use AI Mode, as it does not work in incognito mode or when logged out.
