A tragic incident occurred in the Chak Bonalla area of Mendhar in the Poonch district, where an 11-year-old girl lost her life after being struck by a stone during a landslide. The incident took place on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
Officials reported that the girl, identified as Afiya Kousar, daughter of Mukhtar Ahmad, was hit by a stone during the landslide, resulting in her immediate death. The area is located close to the Line of Control (LoC).
In a separate incident in the Loran area of Poonch, a flash flood struck a seasonal stream near Suman Mohalla, Bela Bala, on Wednesday around 6 pm. Rescue teams from the Indian Army's Loran Company and the Jammu and Kashmir Police Force (JKPF) evacuated approximately 20 stranded civilians and tourists safely. The flash flood had also cut off road connectivity between Loran and Bela Bala. With the help of a JCB machine, debris was cleared to restore access.
Unfortunately, this is not the only recent casualty in the Poonch district due to landslides and flash floods. On Monday evening, July 7, 2025, a 58-year-old man named Ghulam Mohammad from Baarian village of Loran in Poonch also died after being caught under debris from a landslide triggered by a flash flood in the Khoriwala area of Loran in Poonch’s Mandi tehsil. His body was retrieved by locals and a police team.
These incidents highlight the dangers posed by heavy rains and flash floods in the mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir, leading to landslides and causing significant disruptions. Rail services were also affected due to a landslide in the Lakhanpur area of Kathua district, where a goods train derailed, halting rail traffic for over two hours.
