The second morning of the Test match between England and India at Lord's was a captivating affair, marked by contrasting fortunes for the two sides. Joe Root, resuming his innings on 99, wasted no time in reaching his century, much to the delight of the home crowd. However, the joy was short-lived as Jasprit Bumrah struck back with a vengeance, unsettling the English batting lineup with his incisive bowling.
Root began the day in imperious fashion, dispatching Bumrah for a boundary to reach his 37th Test century. In the process, he surpassed Rahul Dravid and moved level with Steve Smith in the list of most Test tons. This was Root's 8th century at Lord's. He also became the leading run-scorer against India in Tests, going past 3000 runs.
However, Bumrah soon found his rhythm, dismissing Ben Stokes for 44. The Indian pacer then removed Root himself for 104. The ball nipped back in, catching the inside edge of Root's bat before crashing into the stumps. This was the 11th time Bumrah has dismissed Root in Test cricket. Bumrah continued his onslaught, further denting England's progress. He finished the day with four wickets.
At the time Root was dismissed, England were 271/6. Chris Woakes fell the very next ball, also to Bumrah. India's bowlers, particularly Bumrah, displayed great discipline and skill to capitalize on the conditions and put their team in a strong position.
