Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to embark on a significant five-nation tour from July 2nd to July 9th, 2025, demonstrating India's commitment to strengthening ties with key nations in Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. This extensive diplomatic outreach includes visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. The Prime Minister's agenda includes attending the BRICS Summit in Brazil and holding bilateral meetings with various heads of state to discuss a range of issues from trade and investment to defense and global governance.
The Prime Minister's first stop will be Ghana on July 2nd and 3rd, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over three decades. Discussions with President John Dramani Mahama will focus on strengthening collaboration in economic, energy, and defense sectors, as well as development initiatives. Key areas of focus include agriculture, building a vaccine development hub in West Africa, critical minerals, and digital public infrastructure. This visit also aims to enhance India's engagement with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union.
Continuing his journey, PM Modi will visit Trinidad and Tobago on July 3rd and 4th, marking the first Prime Minister-level visit from India since 1999. At the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, he will engage in talks with both the President, Christine Carla Kangaloo, and the Prime Minister. He is also expected to address a Joint Session of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, highlighting the shared cultural and historical bonds between the two nations. This visit is particularly significant as Trinidad and Tobago commemorates 180 years since the arrival of Indian immigrants.
The third leg of the tour will take PM Modi to Argentina on July 4th and 5th, where he will meet President Javier Milei. Discussions will aim to expand cooperation in defense, agriculture, mining, renewable energy, trade, and investment, further strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations. This visit marks the first full-fledged meeting between PM Modi and President Milei, following their earlier interactions on the sidelines of multilateral events. India is expected to reiterate its concerns on cross-border terrorism during the BRICS meeting in Brazil and Argentina.
From July 5th to 8th, PM Modi will be in Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, followed by a state visit. This will be his fourth visit to Brazil. The BRICS summit will address key global issues such as reform of global governance, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, responsible use of artificial intelligence, climate action, global health, and economic and financial matters. On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi will meet President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brasilia to expand bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, defense, energy, space, technology, agriculture, and health. Defence production and cooperation are expected to be key discussion points, with Brazil expressing interest in India's Akash surface-to-air missile system and secure communication technologies.
The final stop on the tour is Namibia on July 9th, marking PM Modi's first ever visit to the country. He will hold talks with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, pay tribute to Namibian decolonization icon Sam Nujoma, and address the Namibian Parliament. An agreement on unified payment interoperability is also expected to be signed during the visit.
This five-nation tour underscores India's proactive approach to strengthening its relationships with countries in the Global South, focusing on mutually beneficial partnerships and addressing key global challenges.
