On July 13, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump attended the FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where he experienced a mixed reception from the crowd. While some attendees cheered, Trump was also met with a chorus of boos during the event.
Trump's appearance at the Club World Cup final coincided with the one-year anniversary of the assassination attempt he survived at an election rally in Pennsylvania. He was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, as well as several administration officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. FIFA President Gianni Infantino joined Trump in a luxury suite. Other notable guests in the President's suite included Attorney General Pam Bondi, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, NFL great Tom Brady, and media mogul Rupert Murdoch.
As Trump entered the stadium, he was initially greeted with applause. However, the cheers soon turned to boos when he was briefly shown on the stadium's Jumbotron screen saluting to the U.S. national anthem. The camera quickly cut away. Later, after Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain, Trump walked onto the field for the trophy presentation and was once again met with boos.
Following the match, Trump participated in the post-match ceremony, presenting the FIFA Club World Cup trophy to Chelsea. He also presented individual honors, including the Golden Ball to Chelsea's midfielder Cole Palmer and the Golden Glove to Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. Trump and Infantino also handed out medals to referees, the PSG squad, and the victorious Chelsea players and coaching staff. The ceremony concluded with Trump and Infantino presenting the trophy to Chelsea, who celebrated on the pitch.
Trump has expressed his desire to use the Club World Cup and the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which will also have its final at MetLife Stadium, as symbols of a "Golden Age of America" during his second term in the White House. The 2026 World Cup final will coincide with the 250th anniversary of America's independence.
