A 58-year-old Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus driver in Chennai died of a heart attack while driving on Sunday morning. The incident occurred in Arumbakkam, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old pedestrian and damage to multiple vehicles.
The deceased driver, identified as Velumani from Dharmapuri, was operating bus route 70C, which runs between Koyambedu and Tambaram. Around 6 a.m., while en route from the Vadapalani depot to the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) to begin his scheduled service, Velumani collapsed on the steering wheel. The bus then careened out of control.
The out-of-control bus struck Sasikumar, a pedestrian from Chetpet, who was walking along the roadside. After hitting the pedestrian, the bus crashed into three cars parked outside a hotel before finally halting.
Eyewitnesses at the scene broke the windshield of the bus to extract Velumani. Both Velumani and Sasikumar were rushed to Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival. Their bodies have been sent for postmortem examination. At the time of the incident, the bus was empty of passengers. The conductor was on board but escaped unhurt.
According to reports, Velumani had complained of chest discomfort earlier but decided to complete the short drive to the depot before resting. T Prabhushankar, managing director of MTC, stated that CCTV footage from the bus indicated a sudden heart attack. He also confirmed that because it was the bus's first trip of the day, there were no passengers on board and that Velumani had begun his shift 30–45 minutes before the accident. Prabhushankar added that Velumani's family would receive the necessary assistance, including a government job for a family member.
The Anna Nagar Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW) police have registered a case and are currently investigating the incident. Cranes were used to remove the damaged bus and cars from the road.
